The places of the heart

Despotiko

There are some anchorages that are extremely dear to sailors. We refer to those almost perfectly closed coves that become shelters under any wind conditions. Among these there is Ormos Despotiko, a small stretch of sea set between the island with the same name and the neighboring Antiparos, that is open only to the north through a narrow and shallow channel. Even when the notorious meltemi blows very strongly, inside the gulf the sea is calm, and looking at the surrounding lands protecting it you have the feeling to be in a lake. On the west coast of Antiparos, the village of Agios Giorgos with a church, a couple of tavernas and the main road leading to the main village lying on the east coast of the island. On the other side of this inlet, lies the uninhabited and wild island of Despotiko where recent excavations have unearthed a small archeological site. On Despotiko, you can find pristine white beaches located on the southern coasts of the islands, well protected by the main winds.
